Educating Ecuador Brick by Brick
Lawrence, New Jersey/ US. September 2012 to February 2013.

The “Educating Ecuador Brick by Brick” initiative was formed by students in Lawrence High School to improve the education of underprivileged children living in Ecuador. Throughout the 2012-2013 school year, students involved in “Educating Ecuador Brick by Brick” took donations from members of their community. Those who donated to the fundraiser were asked to write their name or organization on a paper brick, and these bricks were added to a cardboard school house to symbolize the way each donation helped build the education of children in Ecuador.

Through their fundraising efforts, students were able to raise $1,354.30. All proceeds were donated to Free the Children, a non-profit organization that builds schools in rural China and Ecudador.

Making a Difference:
“We feel as though all children should enjoy the same right to an education that we take for granted here in America. School in general has been a driving force in making us into the people we are today. Being able to wake up every day to go to school isn’t something quite a few American students look forward to doing. Kids in Ecuador don’t have the same luxury as we do to enjoy being educated for free which gives us a greater chance to live above the poverty line.” –Shurman Riggins, co-chair of the “Educating Ecuador Brick by Brick” initiative
