2012-2013 College and Career Readiness Seminar

February 5, 2013  – Middlesex County College

As part of the CTE Month activities, the Career and Technical Education Partnership of New Jersey’s Marketing Project will host a Career and College Readiness Seminar at Middlesex County College on February 5, 2013. The seminar will help New Jersey students explore careers in Marketing and will feature a keynote presentation and a hands-on “Career Walk” set of break-out sessions.
Our keynote presenter, Mark DiBenedetto, is an accomplished fashion executive with demonstrated success in sales, profits, brand positioning, and strategic planning at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Chanel and Fendi. He has served as the Director of Chanel’s Flagship Store, Store Manager and Director of Business Development for Bergdorf Good-man, and Director Flagship Store and Vice President Wholesale of Fendi NA where he led the wholesale handbag, RTW, shoe and fur businesses.

Students and Teachers attending this year’s College and Career Readiness Seminar were priviledged to experience our Keynote address presented by Mark DiBenedetto.  Mark provided an overview of his work experience along with tips for building a successful career in marketing.

College and Career Readiness Seminar Panel Discussion

A panel discussion followed the keynote presentation at this year’s College and Career Readiness Seminar.  Members of the Industry panel included: Greg Giombarrese who is entering his 5th season with the Lakewood BlueClaws as their Sr Manager of Media and Public Relations; Andre Paquin who is the owner of Andre Paquin Associates, a branding and marketing communications consultancy based in Middletown, New Jersey; and Dr. Colleen Georges who runs Colleen’s Career Creations, where she provides career coaching and résumé writing for clients across the professional spectrum and facilitates career workshops at various venues.

College and Career Readiness Seminar Breakout Sessions

A number of breakout sessions followed the Industry Panel discussion at this year’s College and Career Readiness Seminar.  A few of the sessions were recorded are now available for viewing.  Session titles and descriptions appear below.

How to pick a college: Presented by Sattik Deb: Director of Student Services with the Department of Labor Studies and Employment Relations at Rutgers University.

This session provided tips on the process of selecting a college that is right for you. The session touched on goal setting, research – “doing your homework” and visits.  (Complete video is 27:42 minutes)

Building a student portfolio (resumes, etc.) and your social media accounts Presented by Dr. Colleen Georges who owns and operates Colleen’s Career Creations.
This session provided guidance into how to build a useful and effective resume and portfolio. This session also highlighted what should and should not be in your social media accounts.  (Complete video is 37:20 minutes)

Where are the jobs? How do I get hired? Presented by: Cindy Mesko; President of PRServices, LLC
This session explored the workplace of today and the projected outlook for marketing jobs in the future.  This session also highlighted skills that future employers will require. (Complete video is 26:26 minutes)

B2B or B2C which one is right for me?
Presented by: Tom Lento who is the principal consultant of InterComm, a consultancy that provides strategic PR and corporate communications services. His clients include technology-based business-to-business companies. He has also served as corporate communications director at Sarnoff Corporation, an executive at advertising and PR agencies, and a faculty member at universities in the US and Japan. He holds MA and PhD degrees from the University of Iowa. The most recent of his four business books is Henry Kressel and Thomas V. Lento, Entrepreneurship in the Global Economy: Engine for Economic Growth (New York: Cambridge University Press, 2012).

This session was not recorded but it offered insights into exploring careers in either Business to Business (B2B) companies or Business to Consumer (B2C) companies.

*Notes: The Networking Activity will allow students to network with other students from schools outside their own. In addi-tion, this time slot provides time for students to visit volunteer Marketing professionals located at table stations within the seminar space.
